MAGS

Multi Agency Group Services

What is a MAGS group?

MAGS is an initiative to help and support young people aged between 14 and 16 years of age.

It is jointly run by professional workers from the Islands Youth Service, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), Education Welfare Service, Social Services and the Youth Offending team (YOT).

There are usually between 6 and 10 young people in each group which meets during term time for one morning a week.

Each group lasts for one whole term and does not meet at half term.

There are usually two or sometimes  three group workers (female and male).

MAGS groups currently meet in the MAGS room which is at the Youth & Community Office, 29 High Street, Newport (opposite the Guildhall).

Young people in MAGS groups are free to share and explore issues that concern them or make them unhappy.  These might include being the victim of bullying; their parents may be divorced or separated; they may have problems with relationships; difficulty coping with pressures at home or at school.

They can reveal as much or as little of their thoughts and feelings as they wish in a supportive and confidential setting.

Groups usually involve discussions, exercises and games.

The groups atmosphere is supportive, sympathetic and confidential.

Young people attend voluntary with the knowledge and agreement of their school and parents/carers.

REFERRALS - Anyone who works with young people can refer them to a MAGS group using the enclosed form.  the referrer first obtains the yougn person's permission and then contacts the school and parents/carers for their agreement.  Reasons for referral are kept confidential to respect the young person's privacy.
